Full moon will be pink for only a fleeting moment at Alabama’s sunset Saturday

It’s named the "Pink Moon," but that’s more because of a pink wildflower that blooms this time of year.

The fourth full moon of 2025 will occur this weekend. If you want to see a colored moon, you'd better watch when the sun sets on Saturday. For a fleeting moment, Alabama skywatchers can catch a golden or rose-colored hue. That is due to the light of the moon being bent and scattered by the Earth’s atmosphere.

Otherwise, you won’t see pink, only a large full moon at first and a smaller one later.

The name "Pink Moon" comes from Phlox Subulata, or moss pink — one of the first wildflowers to bloom in Alabama’s early spring. That and the brief coloration right after sunset will be the only color show skywatchers will get.

This full moon reaches peak illumination at 7:22 p.m. CT on Saturday. For the best view, find a wide-open area and look east just after sunset. When the moon is low, it appears larger than usual due to "moon illusion."

Alabama skywatchers who look closely can also see a shining companion near the moon, Spica, the brightest star in the Virgo c

Meteor Shower Calendar 2025-2026

A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors are observed to radiate, or originate, from one point in the night sky called Radiant. These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories. The Meteor Data Center of the IAU lists over 900 suspected meteor showers of which about 100 are well established.

The meteor showers listed below are the easiest to observe and provide the most activity. Particular attention should be noted to the time and moonlight conditions. All these showers are best seen after midnight. Some are not even visible until after midnight. Showers that peak with the moon’s phase greater than one half illuminated (first quarter to last quarter) will be affected by moonlight and difficult to observe.

While the time each shower is best seen remains much the same year after year, the moonlight conditions change considerably from one year to the next. As we approach the date of each shower's maximum, be sure to consult the latest AMS article about Meteor Showers, which will provide in depth information on each shower

Don’t miss August’s full moon: When to see the 'Sturgeon Moon’ light up the sky over Alabama

The penultimate full moon of summer is just around the corner, and Alabama skywatchers are in for a treat. Known as the Sturgeon Moon, August's full moon will shine bright this week, lighting up the night sky with its seasonal glow.

Here's what you need to know about this month's full moon, including the peak time to see it, and if skies will be clear that night.

When can I see August's full moon?

The Sturgeon Moon will reach peak illumination on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 2:55 a.m. CST. According to Time and Date, the moon will rise at 8:06 p.m. and will set at 7:19 a.m. the next morning.

The final full moon before fall arrives will be Sept. 7.

Will Alabama skies be clear that night?

Skies over Alabama are expected to be clear, offering a great view of the Sturgeon Moon, according to the National Weather Service's sky cover map. Evening temperatures should be comfortable, hovering around 70 degrees.

Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon?

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, August's full moon is named after the lake sturgeon, a massive, ancient fish once common in the Great Lakes. Nat
