You’re Next had the potential to be the series’ strongest film, especially during a point when superhero culture as a whole is making more subversive and reflexive decisions that bravely relitigate the nature of heroes, villains, and what they represent. What’s even more frustrating is that My Hero Academia is no stranger to these themes and they’re elegantly unpacked in the anime’s fifth and sixth seasons. It’s unfortunate that You’re Next falls short in this regard and inevitably feels like another standard My Hero Academia movie that more or less follows the same beats as its predecessors rather than truly disrupting the status quo.

This is the challenge with anime movies that are forced to coexist with an ongoing season and strive to tell canonical stories, albeit ones that can’t go against what the primary narrative establishes. You’re Next– along with the past My Hero Academia movies – tells a massive story, but one that still comes across as frivolous and extraneous because it needs to be, by necessity.
To this point, My Hero Academia: You’re Next is extremel
When Does My Hero Academia: You're Next Take Place in the Timeline?
My Hero Academia: You're Next is the latest movie in the My Hero Academia franchise. Typically, My Hero Academia movies (of which this is the fourth) are set during the season of the anime in which they're released, and that's true here as well.
Due to a number of clues, it's possible to pin down exactly when the movie is set, even without resorting to spoilers. These clues are found both in the movie itself as well as the anime series. Since season 7 of the anime has largely been focused on the final confrontation between the heroes and villains, it's obvious that the incident depicted in the movie takes place just before that conflict goes down, but what's less apparent is just how close the events of the movie are to the final battle seen in the series.
My Hero Academia: You're Next is Set Early in Season 7
The Film Precedes the Final Confrontation with the Villains
My Hero Academia: You're Next is set precisely after Season 7, episode 4 of the anime. This episode is just after Aoyama is revealed as the UA traitor, and as a result, Aoyama is not featured in the movie along with t
My Hero Academia Season 7 is shaking things up in big ways with each of its final episodes, and the post-credits scene from the newest episode revealed a heartbreaking weakness that even Himiko Toga didn’t expect to have. My Hero Academia has been making its way through the final fights between the heroes and villains through the season thus far, and the anime is reaching its final few episodes of the season for its run this Fall. But as My Hero Academia Season 7 prepares for its grand finale, each of the heroes and villains find themselves in an unexpected place.
The war between the heroes and villains has led to some major losses on both sides in My Hero Academia, but one loss that really hasn’t been matched was Twice. His death really made a pivot in the series to showcase just how serious these final fights between the heroes and villains would get from that point on, and Toga had been hit the hardest emotionally as a result of that loss. It’s led to her final plot of copying his quirk to make an infinite army of doubles, and Toga has hit an unexpected brick wall.
