Jalil Hackett will have a chance to avenge his lone career defeat.

Plans are in place for the Washington D.C.-bred welterweight to run it back with Puerto Rico’s Jose Roman. The rematch is eyed for March 15 on the Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams-Patrice Volny DAZN undercard at Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.

Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn, Hackett’s promoter, revealed the match in conversation with Omari Jones, a 2024 Olympic Bronze medalist whose pro debut will serve as the March 15 co-feature.

“Hackett’s rematching that guy on your card, the one he lost to in Puerto Rico,” Hearn told Jones. “He’s rematching him on your card.”

Roman (14-1, 6 KOs) pulled off one of the biggest upsets of 2024 with a split decision win over the highly touted Hackett (9-0, 7 KOs at the time) last Dec. 7 at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Judge Carlos Colon scored the bout 96-94 in favor of Hackett but was overruled by judges Gerardo Martinez and Luis Ruiz, both of whom had 96-94 for Roman.

The fight took place on the ‘Before The Bell’ portion of the undercard in support of Richardson Hitchins’ IBF 140-pound title-winning decision over Australia’s Liam Paro.

Jalil Hackett (9-1, 7 KOs) was set to avenge his December loss to Jose Roman (14-1, 6 KOs) this  Saturday, March 15th at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida. At yesterday’s press conference he looked ready and primed to put on a spectacular performance.

Stating that they would  announce a new WBA Continental North America welterweight champion or as they say in  Puerto Rico, “Y El Nuevo,” translating to, “And the New.” He has the warrior mentality, where you take on tough fights to prove your worth, you beat tough opponents, and demonstrate your greatness. He doesn’t believe in building your resume with soft opponents. He wanted nothing more than to avenge his loss and continue his path.

However, after the press conference, he suffered what can be described as a freak accident.  While coming out of the sauna, he slipped, injuring his right foot. “I was coming out of the sauna,  you know how the sauna got two levels, so on the way down from one of the levels I slipped and lost my foot type of sh*t. Instead of landing like flat on my foot, I landed on the ball of my ankle. My sh*t immediately swelled up.” said Jalil when asked about the injury.

He was visibly upset and disapp

Matchroom Boxing announced the signing of rising American Welterweight Jalil Hackett in May 2024.

Hackett made his official Matchroom debut two months later in Philadelphia on the undercard of Jaron Ennis-David Avanesyan.

'Major' stepped up to face Peter Dobson as the chief support and ran out with UD victory in a great learning fight to move to 9-0.

Hackett closed out the year against 13-1 Jose Roman in Puerto Rico but faded towards the end of the fight and slipped to his first defeat as a professional.

* WBA Continental North American Welterweight Title

Jalil Hackett will face Jose Roman in a rematch for the WBA Continental North America Welterweight title on Saturday March 15 at Caribe Royale in Orlando, live worldwide on DAZN, as further additions to the undercard are made where Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams headlines against Patrice Volny, Edgar Berlanga returns to activity and Team USA Olympic medalist Omari Jones makes his professional debut.

Roman and Hackett met in Puerto Rico in December, where Roman edged Hackett our via a razor-thin split decision to take the title. Roman (14-1 6 KOs) hosted Hackett (9-1 7 KOs) at home in their first meeting and now the Puerto Rican steps through the ropes in America for the fifth time in his career for the rematch, as 21 year old starlet Hackett looks to gain immediate revenge and claim his title back.

“Camp has been amazing for this fight and I’m more ready than ever,” said Roman. “They made a big mistake thinking I was an ‘average fighter’. I was a multi National Champion that represented Puerto Rico all over the world, and I was only one clash away from being an Olympian in 2016! The first hour was not a stroke of luck and on March 15, I will prove I am the better fighter. I observe forwa jalil hackett next fight
