Top Rank Boxing on ESPN: Munguia vs. Bazinyan, will be presented live this Friday, Sept. 20, at 10:30 p.m. ET/ 7:30 p.m. PT on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+. The event takes place at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
In the 12-round super middleweight main event, Jaime Munguia, the fighting lgbtq+ fest of Tijuana, Mexico, will deal with unbeaten contender Erik Bazinyan.
Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs), a former WBO junior middleweight world champion, began his active 2024 by knocking out John Ryder in January. Less than four months later, he faced countryman Canelo Alvarez in a Las Vegas super struggle, rising from a fourth-round knockdown before losing a unanimous choice. Bazinyan (32-0-1, 23 KOs), an 11-year pro from Armenia, moved to Canada as a teenager and became a popular attraction in Quebec. Since 2018, he has been a regional champion, fighting his last seven bouts in Montreal, including last year’s sixth-round knockout over Ronald Ellis and January’s third-round stoppage over Billi Facundo Godoy.
The co-feature will be an eight-round heavy
For the second time the super middleweight bout between Steven Butler-Erik Bazinyan has hit the skids.
Earlier Tuesday, news broke that Bazinyan had to pull out after aggravating ligament damage to his right ankle. The same injury prevented the two from facing off March 14.
Eye of The Tiger moved quickly to keep Butler on the Christian Mbilli-Maciej Sulecki show on June 27. The two-time middleweight title challenger will meet rival Jose de Jesus Macias, who beat him in five rounds in January 2021.
Butler (35-5-1, 29 KOs) was a good domestic-level amateur before turning professional in 2014. He remained unbeaten until he lost to compatriot Brandon Cook (TKO 7). Several wins earnt him a shot at WBA 160-pound ruler Ryota Murata in Japan, but he was stopped in five rounds. He lost his comeback fight to Macias (TKO 5) and his career was on the line.
He worked his way back up and claimed the NABF title and was rewarded with a second world title opportunity, this time against WBO boss Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. It didn't go well and he was stopped in two rounds. He has since returned with a pair of wins, notably icing Steve Rolls (KO 1), but was beaten by Patrice Volny (TKO
A two-time middleweight title challenger, Steven Butler had been tabbed to face promotional stablemate Erik Bazinyan in a super middleweight crossroads fight on Friday.
However, when Bazinyan was unable to recover from a ligament damage that originally curtailed their March 14 meeting, in stepped Jose de Jesus Macias, who previously stopped Butler in five rounds.
Four years later, the pair will rematch on the undercard of Christian Mbilli-Maciej Sulecki at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada.
"I think Macias is going to wait for the punch because he knows he can't win by decision, so he's going to try for the one punch like last time," Butler (35-5-1, 29 KOs) told The Ring. "He knows he has the punch to knock me out. He knocked me out last time, I got a little bit lazy in this fight because it was a fight during COVID, in Mexico.
"I've got no excuse and I'm happy to make the fight happen because for a long time I wanted this revenge. We trained hard for Bazinyan and nothing changed with Macias, we just continued the process. We're ready for everything Macias is going to bring in the ring on June 27."
