A reboot of the original film franchise, ‘Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin’ is a found footage horror movie that revolves around Margot, a fresh woman who probes into a sinister mystery surrounding her mother’s disappearance years ago. Her quest reveals a harrowing truth about her mother, and a vision of horror unleashes itself. The film serves as the seventh installment of the ‘Paranormal Activity’ film series.

  The brilliant collaboration between director William Eubank and screenwriter Christopher Landon features compelling performances by Emily Bader, Dan Lippert, and Roland Buck III. It is a refreshing take on the found-footage storytelling. The spine-chilling tale unfolds in a snow-capped suburban region, especially an Amish farmhouse, perfected with a haunted cabin.   I was a bit weary of this next Paranormal Activity movie. Usually when you get past two or three installments of a series, the quality is not as good and the story gets stretched too thin. For Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, my friends and I went in expecting to make fun of it, which did happen at a couple points. Although, we weren’t expecting much, I tried to go in with an open mind.

  This film, directed by William Eubank, follows Margot (Emily Bader), Dale (Dan Lippert), and Chris (Roland Buck III) as they try to find answers to Margot’s past. Margot recently learned she was related to an Amish family. Her mother abandoned her when she was a baby at a hospital and her search for answers brought her to the countryside and an off-the-grid lifestyle. As you can guess, not all is as it seems and things get weird. Then, chaos ensues and the movie ends. Much like the rest of the film franchise.

  I must admit I really wanted to watch this and review it because it was filmed as part of Buffalo Film Works, which is a filming studio located in Buffalo. NY, my hometown.
