Broadband Expansion in Cherokee County, N.C.
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — On Wednesday, August 31, Blue Ridge Mountain EMC (BRMEMC) was awarded $5,250,000 in funding through the Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) Grant program as part of North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s plan to invest nearly $2 billion in federal and state funds to close the digital divide in North Carolina. The GREAT Grant program provides matching grants to internet service providers and electric membership cooperatives that partner with individual N.C. counties to compete for funding to expand high-speed internet service to unserved areas of the state. BRMEMC will match 30% of the total $5.3 million and the state of North Carolina will cover the remaining 70%. All awards are contingent on final executed grant agreements with broadband provider partners. This brings BRMEMC’s GREAT grant funding total to $12.5 million with a recently announced $5.4 million project, as well as a $1.8 million completed project, both located in Clay County, NC.
Funds from this grant will be used to expand BRMEMC’s fiber-optic network in the general area of south central Cherokee County, including Martins C

This is a summary of the Cherokee County Electric Co-op Association (CCECA) responses to my questions regarding their new Internet Service which is coming to East Shore Estates:
We have already started construction in areas around East Shore Estates but you will start to see more activities over the course of the next couple months. We have crews working along the North East side of the lake at this time (East Lake Woods) and will be starting to move down the East side of the lake. We anticipate that we will complete construction and have service available for your area around July of this year. We will be building out the infrastructure to connect and support all homes in our service
Broadband Across Texas
Bandera might be only an hour from San Antonio, the seventh-largest city in the United States, but that was little consolation for the town’s schoolchildren. You could see them waiting in line at the library almost every afternoon because that was the only place in town where the computers had high-speed internet access.
“That’s when I knew we had to do something,” says William Hetherington, CEO of Bandera Electric Cooperative, which serves 25,000 members in seven counties in the Hill Country. “It wasn’t right that they couldn’t do their homework if they didn’t get in before the library closed in the afternoon.”
To that end, Bandera EC in 2017 started offering broadband internet service, the same kind urban residents take for granted. Those who want it will be able to purchase reliable, high-speed service delivered through fiber-optic cables, allowing students to do homework at home. With this internet access, members can apply for college loans, complete financial transactions, file taxes, run a business, video chat and shop. In other words, they can do everything that has become part of 21st-centu
