Upcoming Regional Championship Qualifiers
(April 12–July 20)

We're kicking off the season with the first round of Regional Championship Qualifier events. These are the first steps on many players' paths to the Pro Tour, and this round could be the prologue to your competitive odyssey.

This round will run from April 12 to July 20. RCQs at your local game store can be run as Modern Constructed or Limited, so contact your store for details. "Destination RCQs," often run as a part of larger conventions, host a variety of formats. There are plenty of places to test your mettle against fellow players!

The Modern RCQ season is in full swing so I wanted to revive my Paper Tips series. As I watch paper Magic coverage I see small edges given away that could turn a mediocre day into a Regional Championship invite. I’ve been playing primarily paper Magic tournaments since 2001 and I’ve picked up plenty of tricks along the way. Today I’m going to discuss Modern-specific and tournament tips.

RIW’s Modern RCQ on June 21 is the perfect place to put lessons learned from this article into practice.

DISCLAIMER:This is how I approach paper Magic. There are many ways to approach these topics.

HAVE AN IN-MATCH AND POST-MATCH RITUAL

When I am getting ready for a round at a competitive tournament I try to keep things as consistent as possible to avoid thinking about things I can prepare for ahead of time.

-Sit facing the round clock (typically only one player can see this easily)

-Put my phone in my backpack (to avoid distractions)

-Pull out my BoogieBoard for life totals and pull out two dice from the case

-Offer a die roll (odd/even) with two dice

-Announce every life total change as I’m writing it down to ensure my opponent and I are i

The tabletop Pro Tour makes its triumphant return at next week's MagicCon: Philadelphia. The Pro Tour Phyrexia invitation list is made up of new pros who have battled their way through Regional Championship Qualifiers (RCQs) and Regional Championships to reach the biggest Magic stage since the launch of the new Premier Play system.

During Season 1, we gathered feedback from players who participated in RCQs around the world, and we’ve incorporated this feedback into our next season.

Changes to the RCQ System

Starting with Season 2, Round 1 of the Regional Championship Qualifiers (taking place from April-August 2023), RCQs will be required to run either a predetermined Constructed format or Limited. Our goal is to unify the competitive playing community during this time and make it easier for players to focus on one format (or one format plus Limited) across a qualifying season. Certain larger events will still be able to provide RCQ support as part of other events.

We also wanted to give stores some flexibility and support our Limited fans. Limited will remain an option with the designated constructed format for all RCQ rounds.

For Season 2, Round 1 the constructed for

Upcoming Regional Championship Qualifiers

The second round of 2025–26's RCQs will begin on August 2, 2025, and will run until November 9, 2025. All WPN stores, as well as destination event organizers, will be running RCQs that feed into the round of Regional Championships that runs from January 24, 2026, to March 22, 2026.

RCQs run during this round can be scheduled by participating WPN stores as Standard Constructed or Limited. Larger events that are designated as "destination" qualifiers—events run in larger venues such as hotel ballrooms or convention centers—may be run as other Constructed formats. Please check with your local organizer for all specific info on qualifiers closest to you.
