Get Past Power Battles the Fun Way – A Playful Parent’s Guide to Discipline
This wasn’t how I planned my morning.
I had imagined more sleep and a peaceful waking. Instead, my five year old crawled in bed with me very early and wide awake. He snuggled warmly with me for about two minutes before pestering me with rambunctiousness.
I could feel my grumps coming on. “It’s not fair! I want to sleep” I thought.
He started pawing at me and growling like an animal.
I wanted to turn right over and pull the covers over my head, but as I looked at him growling away, I thought to myself, now here is a little creature who is showing me he wants to play. He wants attention and connection.
I could have stayed grumpy and resistant. But then we’d both have been miserable.
So, instead, I stepped into my playful parent role. I acted startled, like his growls were really frightening. This gave him lots of delight. He kept growling and I whimpered and hid behind the sheets. I made baby kitten sounds: “Meow!” “Hiss!” with my tiny claws extended. He laughed hard at this.
Then I was a baby bear. “Rawrrr” I said in a small voice. He was really laughing now.

Following safer sleep guidelines will help keep your baby safe and well and reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS, formerly known as cot death). We know it’s a hard thing to think about, and thankfully it’s rare, but it’s good to be aware of it because it can still happen and getting into a safer sleep routine will reduce the risk. The steps below will show you how.
Where will my baby sleep?
- Your baby should sleep in the same room as you. The safest place for baby to sleep is in the same room as you for at least the first six months, for all sleeps, day and night. You can still pop out to go to the loo, but for the most part, they’re safest when you’re nearby.

The Room Next Door Parent Guide
Old friends Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) have drifted apart over the years, but when Ingrid hears that Martha has terminal cervical cancer, she pays her a visit in the hospital. The two women pick up where they left off, reminiscing about their careers and personal lives, and briefly discussing Martha’s prognosis.
Martha has been participating in an experimental research study but when it’s apparent that her cancer has not responded, she decides to take her fate into her own hands. She obtains a suicide pill from the dark web and decides to kill herself before pain and the indignity of terminal illness overwhelm her. (“Cancer can’t get me if I get it first,” she says.) There’s just one catch: Martha doesn’t want to die alone. She asks Ingrid, not to assist with her death, but to be in the next room when she dies…
If you think The Room Next Door is a movie-with-a-message, you’d be right. This film is a call to legalize euthanasia, with a side theme critiquing the scorched earth approach involved in some cancer treatment protocols. If you’re looking for nuance, subtlety, or a careful examination of the ethical and moral
In the days before Zoom calls cluttered our calendars, Seattleites regularly hopped down to San Francisco for a business meeting, there and back the same day.
But the City by the Bay isn’t just for quick perform trips, it should be at the top of every Seattle family’s getaway list. The flight is a mere 1½ hours. Tickets are cheap (mine were $75, less than the require of a dinner out). And there’s so much to observe and do with kids.
Like Seattle, San Francisco saw the pandemic upend its downtown core and its reputation tarnished. A 2024 Nielsen survey found the number of visitors from Seattle plummeted by 21%, the sharpest decrease of any vacation destination.
Waiting in line at San Francisco’s Ferry Building, the woman in front of me was a local — and a Husky. COVID turned the city into a ghost town, and she said she was glad to spot the tourists return. She could have been describing Seattle.
San Francisco is a gorgeous city on a small peninsula. Go check in the classics like the Golden Gate Bridge and the cable cars, then try newer additions like Tunnel Tops and Waymo. Here’s what to do while you’re here:

The Room Next Door
Parents need to know that The Room Next Door is a beautifully told drama about a terminally-ill woman, Martha (Tilda Swinton), who asks her friend, Ingrid (Julianne Moore), to help her end her own life on her terms. The subject of assisted dying is handled sensitively and with compassion. Despite her situation, Martha shows a calmness and optimism to life. She has a deep appreciation for the world she leaves behind, especially in regards to the arts. Ingrid is initially reluctant to assist her friend, but listens to her and agrees to help. There is occasional language, including "f--k," "bulls--t," and "a--hole." In a flashback sequence to Martha's time working as a war correspondent, a character is seen running into a burning building to help people. Characters discuss buying and using drugs recreationally, and someone references an ex-partner as being a "passionate lover." The movie is the first English-language feature film by acclaimed filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. It is based on the novel What's Your Torment by Sigrid Nunez.
